i3 Resources, A New Kind of Consultant
"Consultants with solutions, that's what we say," says Kevin Heaton, owner of i3 Resources, a local resource management firm. "We take resources that have traditionally been available only to "big business" and make them available to small and middle market companies."
Heaton believes i3 Resources works from a different vantage point than other “traditional” consulting firms.
“The difference between i3 Resources and traditional consultants, who simply tell people what they should do, is that i3 invests the company’s own capital in what we believe is best for our clients, and then give them access to it. Whether it is software, warehouses, Web sites, supply-chain solutions or anything else, we want to be the firm companies turn to for integration of these resources in their business.”
i3 Resources consults on the integration of information, infrastructure and investment resources into small and medium size companies ($1 million to $25 million). The firm was started in October 2007 in Aiken, S.C., and shortly thereafter moved to Lexington, S.C., to open the “i3 Incubator,” which will launch in July, as a business resource center offering business workshops, warehouse and fulfillment services, Web site solutions and, as the next phase, office space.
"We are building Web site solutions for our clients because that is the most logical access point for our clients and our resources," said Heaton.
"I have been around small and middle market companies my whole life, first growing up as the third generation of a family owned small business, then working closely with companies as an advisor at Merrill Lynch and as an owner/operator/investor in a resource center. The one thing I have found consistent is that successful businesses have three ingredients — they know their business and have a great appreciation for business in general, they have the infrastructure to operate efficiently and, most importantly, they are well-capitalized, meaning they have great cash flow and make money. We designed i3 Resources to utilize these three components to help companies adapt and enhance their existing business models to be more profitable."
Most people look at the current recession as an end, but i3 Resources sees it as an opportunity.
“I guess that is because the idea of i3 was born during he recession and has the tools necessary to help companies drive through it and thrive," said Heaton.
