Malaysian Yoga Society (MYS), a mental and physical health oriented humanitarian organisation, in association with the Malaysian Association of Yoga Instructors (MAYI), today announced the Malaysian International Yoga Competition 2011 (MIYC 2011). The competition is open to all yoga practitioners, recreational or professional, and will be held at 1 Utama Shopping Centre, Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, Selangor from 9 till 10 July 2011.
Master Manisekaran, the founder of MYS said, “The aim of the Malaysian International Yoga Competition 2011 is to increase public awareness that yoga is a healthy activity that can be enjoyed by everyone in the family and is secular in nature. It is an exercise for the mind and body which enhances our natural abilities to focus, remain calm and relaxed.”
MIYC 2011 is the 1st yoga competition organized by MYS that is open to international yoga practitioners and is the third yoga competition in its series. Previous competitions were open to a national level.
This year’s competition will see eight age groups separated into two primary categories – adults aged 19 years and above, and children aged 4 years and above. Participants will be judged based on their five favourite yoga “Asana” postures and points are given according to facial expression, going into an Asana, coming out of an Asana, degree of difficulty of an Asana, steadiness and alignment of Asana, as well as flexibility.
The overall champion will get a cash prize of USD2,000 while the top finalists for the adult and children categories will each get USD500 and USD250 respectively. Trophies and consolation prizes awarded to the three participants of each age groups while certificates will be given out to all MIYC 2011 participants.
Competition registration fees are nominally priced at RM15 for children and RM30 for adults. All proceeds from the event will go to charity in aid of teaching yoga the underprivileged segment of society. Founded in 2004, MYS teaches yoga Free of charge to promote it as a science of holistic self-development that benefits mental and physical health. The humanitarian organization has also successfully built a Yoga Home, a shelter for the underprivileged and the socially disadvantaged through fund-raising activities. In addition, MYS also conducts free yoga workshops and classes at schools, orphanages, underprivileged homes and non-profit organisations. “Fund-raising activities are organized to help create a sustainable charity ecosystem to help us reduce reliance on volunteers which is not a long term answer,” added Manisekaran.
MIYC 2011 is more than just a competition as the event will also provide a platform for yoga practitioners across the nation and region to meet and share experiences and practices. There will be insightful talks, fun-filled games and exciting yoga performances during the two-day event. The event venue is sponsored by 1 Utama Shopping Centre and the event is expected to draw 40,000 visitors.
Manisekaran said, “I want to thank the management of 1 Utama Shopping Centre and volunteers for pledging their time and support to this charitable cause.”
